It isn't clear why this was not implemented, since it would only be a few lines of code. The patch that added llapi_lmv_get_uuids() is from quite some time ago (2012), but you could add into your patch commit message a reference for clarity:

This is a ticket for a small change I wish to make that would help users of lustreapi to list MDT devices.

Appreciate your guidance in this regard if this is something that will make sense to do.
Also this would be my first change so any additional guidance is appreciated.
