Ahhh.  To re-iterate, you just want to know if there are any known
incompatibilities in running an i686 and x86_64 failover pair?

If so, there shouldn't be any issues given that we support both i686 and
x86_64 servers and on-disk format inherits nothing from the architecture
of the CPU which is writing it.
