From my skimming of it, it appears to explains MDS failover, not MDS
"backup" (which means archiving the MDS to some kind of disaster
recovery media like tape).

The Lustre Operations Manual most certainly does talk about configuring
MDS failover, in section "8. Failover" at
http://manual.lustre.org/manual/LustreManual16_HTML/Failover.html#50446391_pgfId-5529 specifically at http://manual.lustre.org/manual/LustreManual16_HTML/Failover.html#50446391_pgfId-1287648 for MDS failover.
