Nope, nothing else need be done prior to upgrading.

the user-space tools for example.

That's the idea.

It would work.  We support rolling upgrades and officially support
releases n-1 and n+1 simultaneously -- although in practise we usually
support more than 1 version +/- -- there are just no guarantees beyond
+/-1.
