Thx for input. 

Manual didn't answer my routing question, but it turns out I didn't need to go down the routing path. Running a tunefs.lustre and adding the TCP NID on all the OSTs and clearing the log of the MDT solved the problem.

There is a whole section of the manual (manual.lustre.org) dedicated to routing.  Please let us know if that does not answer your questions.
