I'm not really sure what you are asking.  Lustre clients should be able
to use whatever kernel you want to build it with, within the guidelines
of kernels that we support, which is all the way up to 2.6.27 with 1.8.1
I believe.  Support for newer kernels is in progress.  There is a bug
open and currently being worked for FC's 2.6.29 kernel for example.
