I'm pretty sure this is in the operations manual somewhere.  Have you
read the operations manual?

In any case, you can see what's on an MDT or OST my mounting it with
"mount -t ldiskfs ...".  You must make sure that the device is not
mounted as a member of the Lustre filesystem first though (i.e. umount
it).
