Grab e.g. e2fsprogs-1.41.5.sun2-0redhat.src.rpm

rpm2cpio e2fsprogs-1.41.5.sun2-0redhat.src.rpm | cpio -ivd

This gives you a tarball and a spec file.  Untar tarball.
Patches (applied) and series file are in ./patches.

What I always do is grab the upstream source from sourceforge, then
apply the cfs quilt series since we have a few patches of our own to add
to it.
