We upgraded the specific nodes to Lustre 1.6.7.2 and the problem
disappeared.

Upgrading to a newer release?  I recall that there was a bug in this  
area
at one time that was fixed, but I don't know the bug number or what  
version
it was fixed in.  The current stable 1.6 release is 1.6.7.2.
