We run ~200 older x86_64 cluster nodes on:
 1.6.7.2-2.6.9_89.0.11.ELsmp_200909161434(patchless)

We've had no problems with this combo but this is on CentOS-4.8 (not pure 
RHEL). Also it's somewhat of a trivial setup since we only use tcp transport 
and no complications such as quota.

Before 4.8 we ran 4.7 but I'm not 100% on lustre version used then (probably 
1.6.7.1).
