We updated the kernel to 2.6.32-34 with apt-get upgrade and now the modules load!

You don't have the matching kernel.

Those packages are for kernel 2.6.32-34-server but you are running 2.6.32-33-server.  You need to either upgrade to the matching kernel
(2.6.32-34-server) or rebuild the modules for your 2.6.32-33-server.
Upgrading your kernel would be the easiest option IMHO.
