In my case the client is a stock Ubuntu 16.04 + updates, lustre source 
checked out with :

git clone git://git.whamcloud.com/fs/lustre-release.git

then

cd lustre-release/
sh ./autogen.sh
./configure --disable-server --with-o2ib=no
make
make install

Then loading modules from

/lib/modules/4.4.0-22-generic/kernel/fs/lustre/

And mounting filesystems.
