Taking the suggestion to build the client from the development tree until a
release is available, wouldn't it be beneficial to make such RPMs available
to all rather than building them individually?

IMHO a client should be available as soon as a new EL minor release is GA.
Many sites using Lustre are part of a collaboration and must keep strict
security policy.
For our sites it is EGI and WLCG, for which I already raised my concerns to
the operations coordinations. But there are more collaborations affected.
