As you have discovered, that will not work.

Yes. OFED 1.4.1 will be supported in an upcoming (dependent on OFED
1.4.1 GA availability -- which just yesterday slipped 2 weeks into the
beginning of May) Lustre release. The 1.4.0 OFED release has bugs which
prevents using it to build external modules (such as Lustre) against.
A patch to build against the upcoming 1.4.1 release can be found in bug
17671. It should work with OFED 1.4.1-RC3 (or maybe that's RC4 --
whichever RC includes the fixes for OFA bugs 1538 and 1578) and later.
