Possibly.  Depending on load.

A 32-bit kernel can only access the first GB of memory or so.  The other
3GB would be unused by a Lustre OSS or MDS.  So if load demanded more
than 1GB of memory you really need to go to 64-bit to escape the 1GB
memory limitation.
